Success in Science Fair
What an incredible moment for Portia Primary! Last Friday, our young scientists took part in the Annual District Science Fair, and they absolutely wowed the judges with their creativity, research skills, and presentation.
The competition brought together schools from across the district, each showing off months of hard work. But when it came to innovation, teamwork, and passion — Portia Primary stood out from the crowd.
Some of the winning projects included:
- “Solar Power in Our Community” – by Grade 7 learners, who created a working solar-powered water pump for local gardens.
- “The Science of Clean Water” – by Grade 6 learners, demonstrating an affordable and eco-friendly water filter.
- “Plant Growth in Different Soils” – by Grade 5 learners, proving that compost-rich soil helps plants grow almost twice as fast.
Not only did we win 1st place overall, but our school also received the Best Team Spirit Award — a true reflection of the way our learners supported and cheered each other on throughout the event.
A big thank you to our dedicated teachers and mentors who guided the learners every step of the way, and to our parents for encouraging curiosity at home.
Next stop? The Regional Science Fair in September — and we’re ready to bring our best once again!
Congratulations, Portia Primary — proving once again that when we work together, there’s nothing we can’t achieve!
August is here, and that means a month full of excitement, learning, and opportunities for Portia Primary learners to shine! From the sports field to the stage and even the science lab, there’s something for everyone to look forward to.
Here’s what’s on the horizon:
Inter-School Netball Tournament – 16 August
Our netball teams have been training hard, and we’re ready to bring our best to the court. Come down to Riverside Sports Grounds to cheer for our girls as they aim for gold!
Soccer League Match vs Riverdale High – 20 August
The rivalry is real! Our boys’ team will be facing one of their toughest opponents yet. Let’s pack the stands in blue and gold to show our support.
Art Exhibition – 24 August
Our creative learners will showcase their paintings, sculptures, and craft projects in the school hall. Parents and community members are welcome to attend — you won’t believe the talent on display!
Science Fair Prep Workshops – Every Thursday
With the Regional Science Fair coming up in September, our young scientists are already hard at work. If you have an idea for a project, now’s the time to join the fun.
How you can get involved:
- Wear school colours when attending events.
- Volunteer to help with setup, transport, or snacks.
- Spread the word — invite friends and family to come and cheer!
August is going to be a month to remember — and it’s all thanks to the passion and teamwork of our learners, teachers, and parents.
Let’s make it our best month yet, Portians!

Example:
The moment the first whistle blew, the energy was electric. You could hear the Portia Primary supporters from across the field, waving banners and shouting encouragement. And our team? They gave it everything they had.
Some of the standout moments:
- In the 100m Boys U13, Michael Jacobs exploded out of the blocks and stormed his way to 1st place with an impressive 11.8 seconds.
- Sarah Daniels gave us a nail-biting finish in the 200m Girls U13, missing first by just 0.2 seconds and grabbing silver.
- David Nkosi absolutely flew in the Long Jump Boys U13, hitting a personal best of 6.1m and taking home gold.
- And our Girls U13 4x100m relay team? Flawless baton changes, lightning speed — and yes, another gold medal for the shelf.
By the end of the day, we had racked up enough points to finish 2nd overall out of six schools. That’s no small feat, especially considering the tough competition we were up against.
But beyond the medals and results, what really stood out was the team spirit. Every race had a crowd of our learners at the fence, cheering at the top of their lungs. Every win was celebrated like a championship, and even the tough losses were met with encouragement and high-fives.
What’s next for Portia Primary?
We’re not slowing down — the Inter-School Netball Tournament is on 16 August, and the Soccer League match against Riverdale High kicks off on 20 August.
Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it. Well done, Portians — you made our school shine!
